Patriots to honor Mansfield's Redding

FOXBORO -- The accomplishments of Mansfield High School football coach Mike Redding and his Green Hornets have not been overlooked by their professional brethren next door.

Redding, in his 16th season as the head coach of the MIAA Eastern Mass. Division 3 champions, was named the New England Patriots' High School Football Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

Redding, who led the Hornets to a perfect 13-0 record and a Division 3 Super Bowl championship over 12-1 Swampscott, has accumulated a 117-49-3 record as their head coach.

The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will donate $2,000 to the Mansfield High football program in Redding's name in recognition of his selection as Coach of the Year.

Each week throughout the football season, a panel including representatives of the Patriots and WCVB-TV of Boston (Ch. 5) selected a Patriots High School Coach of the Week, making charitable contributions to each winning coach's school. Redding will be honored by WCVB-TV sports anchor Mike Lynch and the Patriots' director of football development and promotions, five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Andre Tippett, on the `` Patriots All Access'' program that airs on the station Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Redding is a 1979 graduate of North Attleboro High School, where he was a National Honor Society student. He earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track, and finished his stellar high school career with the Rocketeers with 132 receptions for 2,346 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Redding went on to play collegiate football at Holy Cross, finishing his career as the Crusaders' second-leading all-time pass receiver. He earned a master's degree from Brown University.
