Local obituaries were reported for Herbert Moore, 82, of Norton, Sherwood Haskins, 87, of Wrentham, and Bessie Barton, 94, of Plainville.
Herbert Moore, 82, former pastorNORTON -- Herbert A. Moore, 82, of Mansfield Avenue, died Friday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the husband of Irene C. (Ploettner) Moore, to whom he had been married to for 51 years.
He was born in Attleboro on Oct. 12, 1921, a son of the late Herbert A. Moore Sr., and Bertha (Cargill) Moore.
He was a 1940 graduate of Attleboro High School.
Mr. Moore had lived in Norton since 1981, and had previously lived most of his life in Attleboro.
He had been an electroplater for Ripley & Gowan Co. and the Foster Co. of Attleboro, for many years. He retired in 1996, and then went to work for Shaw's Supermarkets in Easton for seven years.
He was a former pastor and member of the Community of Christ Church in Attleboro, Brockton and Avon. He was also a former commissioner of the Anawan Council, Boy Scouts of America, and a pack master of Pack 37 Cub Scouts in Attleboro.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Daniel Moore of Medway, and Randall Moore of Davisburg, Mich.; two daughters, Karen Bilodeau of Wrentham, and Cindy Bylander of San Antonio, Texas; four brothers, Robert Moore and Walter Moore, both of Attleboro, Arthur Moore of Onset, and Kenneth Moore of Plainville; two sisters, Katherine Crane of Reserve, N.M., and Emmaline Brown of Show Low, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Community of Christ Church, South Street, Avon.
Burial will be private. Arrangements are by the Cook-Hathaway Funeral Home, Attleboro.
Sherwood Haskins, 87, active in Wrentham organizationsWRENTHAM -- Sherwood C. Haskins, 87, of Virgil Pond Way, died Dec. 23 at the Pond Home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Marjorie (Connell) Haskins.
Mr. Haskins worked 34 years for Kendall Co. as a purchasing agent in Griswoldville and Walpole before retiring.
Born Aug. 16, 1916 in Taunton, he was a son of the late Leon P. and Effie I. (MacGhee) Haskins.
Formerly of Shelburne Falls, he had lived in Wrentham since 1958.
Mr. Haskins was active in local affairs.
He was a member and former trustee of the Original Congregational Church in Wrentham and had been a director of Wrentham Cooperative Bank, and a trustee of the Pond Home.
He was past president of the Wrentham Little League, and a former director of Boy Scout Troop 61.
He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, and was a past master and 50-year member of Mountain Lodge, AF&AM in Shelburne Falls.
He was a 1934 graduate of Taunton High School, and a graduate of Brown University, Class of 1938.
Mr. Haskins served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army's 24th Infantry Division during World War II, having been stationed in the Pacific Theater.
He loved his garden and spending time with family, especially at the family's seashore home in Chatham. He also had a love of music.
Besides his wife of 61 years, Mr. Haskins is survived by a son, Sherwood C. `` Woody'' Haskins Jr. of Boston.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the Original Congregational Church, downtown Wrentham.
Burial at Wrentham Center Cemetery will be private at a later date.
Arrangements are by R.J. Ross Funeral Home, Wrentham.
Bessie Barton, 94, was town secretaryPLAINVILLE -- Bessie Barton, 94, died Friday at the Lasell House in Newton. She was the widow of Clinton E. Barton Sr.
She was born in Central Falls, R.I., on Dec. 20, 1909, a daughter of the late Walter and Ellen (Edwards) McKechnie.
She moved to Plainville at a young age, and was a graduate of the former Plainville High School. Before retiring, she had been a secretary for the town of Plainville in the selectmen's office, the Plainville school department, and the former Dunebier Insurance Co. of Plainville.
She was a member of the Anglestone Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in North Attleboro, initiated on Nov. 6, 1930. In 1961, she served the order as Worthy Matron, and in 1972, as grand marshal.
Mrs. Barton was also active as mother advisor to the North Attleboro chapter of the Rainbow Girls. She had also served on the Plainville Cemetery Corp.'s board of directors.
She enjoyed needlework, particularly needlepoint and crewel.
Survivors include one son, Clinton Barton Jr. of Lisbon, N.H.; one daughter, Margaretta Arnold of Newton; one brother, Walter McKechnie of Dennis; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late John McKechnie.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the R.J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Route 1A, Wrentham Centre. Burial will be in the Plainville Cemetery.
