Changing of the guard

FOXBORO -- For the first time in 14 games, the New England Patriots' offensive line will have a different look to it Sunday.

Although Patriots' coach Bill Belichick wouldn't confirm it Wednesday, it appears that starting guard Damien Woody is done for the year with a tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee -- not exactly what the Patriots wanted entering the AFC Championship Game this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts (3 p.m.; Ch. 4, 12).

Belichick listed Woody, the fifth-year veteran, as ``doubtful'' on the midweek injury report.

``We'll just take it day-to-day, but that's his status for this week,'' Belichick said.

However, published reports quoted unnamed team sources in detailing the extent of Woody's injury. Supposedly, he will not require surgery to repair the slight team, just as fullback Larry Centers did not go under the knife when he tore his MCL against the Giants on Oct. 12.

With Woody on the shelf, the focus immediately turns to third-year veteran Russ Hochstein as the likely starter in his place. Woody was injured early in the first half of Saturday's 17-14 triumph over Tennessee in the AFC divisional playoff, left the game briefly and returned briefly. He was replaced each time by Hochstein, who finished the game.

``It was OK ... it was a very challenging situation,'' Belichick said of Hochstein's relief appearance. ``Tennessee's got a very challenging front four and some plays were better than others, but overall, it was OK.''

Hochstein was understandably scarce in the Patriots' locker room as a horde of out-of-town media descended upon Gillette Stadium in advance of the AFC title match.
