ATTLEBORO -- Jen Gilbert definitely stated her case to be considered to be called upon from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High softball coach Dave Driscoll.

The sophomore right-handed pitcher made her season debut Saturday on the field at Bishop Feehan High a dramatic and demonstrative one -- firing a no-hitter, facing just 21 batters as the unbeaten Falcons (3-0) shut down the Shamrocks 4-0 in a non-league game.

Gilbert allowed just one base-runner, that being Amie Gordon on a two-out walk in the seventh inning. However, that Shamrock vanished quickly as Falcon catcher Kelsey Duffy picked her off base to end the game.

Gilbert recorded 15 strikeouts, retiring the Shamrock side on three K's in the first, second, third and sixth innings.

The Shamrocks never hit a ball beyond the infield, not putting a ball in play until the fourth inning. Until Gordon reached base in the final frame, only one other batter -- Laura Stokes with two outs in the fifth inning -- drew a three-ball count against the Falcon hurler.
`` She did well at the junior varsity level, you can understand why,'' said Driscoll in praise of Gilbert, who picked up one varsity victory on the pitching mound last season and is amidst a mix of three Falcon hurlers bidding for innings this season.

`` She has three or four pitches and she gets them over,'' added Driscoll of Gilbert's accuracy. `` With the pitching that we have, we should do okay.''

Jenn Bernier, the Falcons' No. 1 hurler and leadoff batter, Justyne Roy, Jen Puccini and Kerry Wilusz each had two hits for D-R, which was shut out through four innings by the Shamrocks' ace hurler, Meghan Elias.

The Falcons used five of their 10 hits in the game to plate three runs in that fifth inning.
