Aid hope fades

Local legislators are warning cities and towns not to get their hopes up over Gov. Mitt Romney's proposal to increase state aid.

The lawmakers said early indications are that Democratic leaders are cool to Romney's idea.

The aid may never be forthcoming, or at least not in the form that Romney proposed.

`` The feedback I'm getting is that people all across the state have mentally spent that money already,'' state Rep. Better Poirier said.

She said it is dangerous to count on money that never might arrive.

Poirier, R-North Attleboro, said the additional aid is a good idea, given that state revenues are coming in higher than expected.

`` But common sense doesn't always prevail up here,'' she said of the Statehouse.

State Rep. John Lepper, R-Attleboro, said he also wonders if the money is in jeopardy because of Democratic opposition.
