NA gas leak clears building

NORTH ATTLEBORO -- About 30 people in apartments and stores at a downtown building were evacuated because of a gas leak on North Washington Street.

Fire Capt. Scott Meyer said the building at 20 North Washington St. was evacuated for about two hours when fire officials detected dangerous levels of gas in the basement.

The building is known as the Anawan Building.

The leak was later determined in a gas line in the street.

New England Gas Co. officials worked through the night to repair the line, according to police and fire officials.

The line was repaired early this morning, Meyer said.
