Mansfield coach sees challenging foe

MANSFIELD -- Back when he was coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Parcells occasionally retired to the ``coaching bunker'' to plan for foes without distraction from the outside world.

Mike Redding wouldn't mind renting the bunker from its current occupants for a day or two, given the short turnaround between games for the Mansfield High School coach and his Hockomock League-champion Hornets.

The 10-0 Hornets, fresh off their stunning 34-7 triumph over the 9-1 Foxboro Warriors, have very little time in which to prepare for their MIAA Eastern Mass. Division 2 playoff semifinal against the 9-2 Blue Eagles of Plymouth North High School.

The game will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Alumni Field, immediately following the Division 2A semifinal between Hingham and Wilmington.

Barely 19 hours after the final play of the 74th annual meeting of the Hornets and Warriors, Redding was looking at films of the Eagles, trying to determine where his team might attack the champions of the Atlantic Coast League. ``We were able to do the film exchange at 8 o'clock, and that's not leaving a lot of time to put together a game plan and starting practice with it,'' said Redding, who didn't get a chance to see the Blue Eagles play in person this year because of weather-related postponements.

So, he was working off tapes of Plymouth North's games against ACL runner-up Falmouth and against Dennis-Yarmouth, a game that went into overtime, and was scheduled to get a tape of the Eagles' early-season, 35-15 loss to Foxboro later Saturday.

What he has seen so far is a physically strong team that diversifies itself on offense.

``Sometimes they'll line up what looks like four linemen to one side and try to pound the ball at you,'' Redding said, ``then other times, they'll run an empty-backfield, spread offense and throw it all over the place.''

Redding likened Plymouth North's physical nature to Hockomock League foe Franklin. The Hockomock's fourth-place team gave each of the top three problems with physical line play this year.
