Seekonk girls fall to Case

SEEKONK -- When the members of the Seekonk High School girls' basketball team see the Case High Cardinals, they see what they'd like to be some day.

Unfortunately, they still had to play the Cardinals as they are Thursday night -- and the result was predictable.

The Warriors suffered a 65-22 loss at the hands of Case, one of the favorites to advance deep into the MIAA Division 3 Tournament in March, even though Cardinals' coach Tony Martin did the humanitarian thing and gave all 14 of his athletes near-equal playing time.

As a result, it may have been difficult for the casual observer to get a read on just how good the Swansea-based Cardinals (5-0) may be -- for instance, highly-touted 6-foot-2 center Sarah Fullmer saw only limited playing time and made just one of her five shots, finishing with four points and three rebounds.

But the Warriors knew what they were seeing. "When we look at a team like this, we use them as a yardstick,'' Seekonk coach Sal Pina said. " I asked the kids, `how did they beat us?' And they said they beat us with double-teams, they beat us with rebounding and they beat us in transition.

"So the kids now know that if we want to be good like them, we have to put that kind of pressure on the basketball like they did, we have to be able to score in transition and we have to do a better job of boxing out,'' he said.
