GOBIS: King returns for UConn in Motor City
BY PETER GOBIS/SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
North Attleboro resident and Bishop Feehan High product Tyler King was back in the lineup for the UConn football team in its victory over Toledo. Making his first start since breaking a leg on Sept. 30, the 6-foot-5 King recovered a fumble on Toledo's fake punt in the first half and four players later, the Huskies were on the scoreboard.
"He's a grinder,'' related Seekonk High boys' hoop coach Rick Patch of senior forward Andrew Sylvia, a banger on the boards and shot blocker. Sylvia missed all of last season with a dislocated knee, scoring just six points in the final six games, that after being academically ineligible during his sophomore season. "He's been playing awesome,'' added Patch.
"If she didn't score a point, she'd still be a great kid,'' North Attleboro High girls' basketball coach John DelBonis categorized junior center Emily Cournoyer.
And also from the Red Rocketeer basketball family, boys' coach Chris Perron is very admiring of the progress of 6-foot-4 junior Ryan Burns, only in his third year of playing -- "he's an unbelievably coachable kid.''
King Philip High lacrosse star Julie Pasquantonio has inked an NCAA letter of intent and been granted a scholarship to UMass-Amherst. And Warrior goalkeeper Kristin LaCava, thought to have a severe knee injury requiring possible ACL surgery after competing in a fall league, has been cleared by physicians.
The NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Committee is compiling an all-time greatest team of 15 and among the 75 nominees are New England Patriot lineman and former Cal State (153-9 at Cal State) grappler Steve Neal and former WWE champion and former Clarion University (116-10-2 at 175 pounds) grappler Kurt Angle.
Former King Philip High track star and coach Mike Besaw is now an assistant coach at North High in Worcester and track coach at Shrewsbury High.
Mike McGrath's Mansfield High hockey team has absorbed more than its early share of bumps and bruises two weeks into the season with Jim Harrington (shoulder), Jared Anderson (elbow), Pat Carroll (groin) and Mike Colleran (hip flexor) all on the mend.
Former Mansfield High field hockey standout Laura Scott, a senior forward with the MASCAC co-champion Westfield State field hockey team (11-6), finished with four goals and six assists, the team's fourth-leading scorer, gaining All-MASCAC acclaim. Another standout member of that team on the defensive backline was Foxboro High product Maryann Kinney, a senior who started all 17 matches.
By the way, former Bishop Feehan High football coach Jack Peavey and his Millsaps College football team went 4-5 on the season, losing three of those by margins of one TD or less. Millsaps averaged just 16 points per game, but ranked third in its conference defensively allowing an average of 20.4 per outing.
Former Attleboro High hoopster Tim Forbes and his No. 13 ranked Bentley College basketball teammates are in Winter Park, Florida for the Tangerine Tournament and then return home to visit former Mansfield High hoopster Cullen McCarthy and his Bryant College teammates Thursday.
"We're making way too many rookie mistakes,'' said Seekonk High girls' basketball coach Sal Pina, whose Warriors lost their first six games of the season. "We're missing stuff that good teams make'' .
Former Patriot Roland James has resigned as Sharon High football coach and to that end Eagles AD Bob Sondheim (781-784-1554) is accepting applications to fill that post, those for boys and girls spring track and lacrosse coaches.
