GOBIS: Back to school for ex-Red Sox Ryan

Former Seekonk High and Red Sox pitcher Kenny Ryan will unveil his new KR Baseball Institute facility, located off of Industrial Highway in Pawtucket on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Former King Philip High Red Sox hurler Jeff Plympton will be on hand along with former Soxers Rick Miller and John Tudor.

The facility features batting cages for both softball and baseball along with fielding stations. Clinics, individual and team instructive classes will be offered with Attleboro High baseball coach Matt Bosh and North Attleboro's Doug Weldon on the staff.

`` The facility is about 90 percent furnished and we'll be up and running for classes on the 17th,'' said Ryan. Individuals wishing to register may contact him at 774-991-1698.

-- The monster of Mansfield, Hornet two-way senior tackle Tom Creeden along with senior cornerback Brett McDermott were the lone two area players to be selected to the Mass. High School Football Coaches Association all-star football team.

-- Mansfield High assistant football coach and former University of Massachusetts tight end Kerry Taylor has inked a contract with the AFL's Arizona Wranglers and is there this weekend for a pre-season camp.

-- Josean Vega, the leading scorer and super slick backcourtman for Brian Walmsley's Wheaton College men's basketball team was thought to have incurred a season-ending broken (non-shooting) wrist in a tournament in New Jersey, but may be back this weekend.

-- Norm Fay, the president of the Attleboro Varsity Booster Club, reports that 63 varsity jackets were awarded to Bombardier fall sport participants, while some $2,000 was donated to the athletic department.

-- Dighton-Rehoboth High football coach Dave Driscoll is coordinating the Mass. High School Football Coaches Association Clinic Jan. 21-22 at the Boston Marriott in Quincy with BC head coach Tom O'Brien and his staff among the lecturers. `` It's a difficult time to get some of these guys because it's in the middle of recruiting season,'' said Driscoll.

-- It hasn't been the best of basketball winters thus far for the Babul brothers of North Attleboro. Jon Babul is at James Madison University, working under his former Georgia Tech assistant Dean Keener, the team (2-8) having lost eight straight games. Mike Babul is at Youngstown State, working under his former UMass assistant John Robic, the team (3-10) having lost nine of its last 10.

-- Several former Foxboro High wrestlers are on the mat collegiately. Mike Ragusa, a freshman at Buffalo is 3-2 thus far at 165 pounds; Jeff Parker, a freshman at Binghamton is 5-12 thus far in heavyweight; while the Worcester Polytech Engineers return to action at Southern Maine this weekend with Rob Saltzman (149) and a pair of ex-North Attleboro High Rocketeers -- senior Kyle Hargreaves and junior Chris Vacher, both at 157 -- ready for duty.

-- Among some other former Rocketeers in the stable of coach Wayne Griffin also on the collegiate mat are Justin Deveau, currently ranked No. 7 nationally among Division III wrestlers at 197 pounds; Andrew Acosta and Shawn Vacher at Norwich University and Chris Howard at Trinity.

-- Former North Attleboro High track star Dan Espinosa, the regional manager for the Bally's Fitness Centers, has been working with former Seekonk High track coach Frank Mooney on many a Mass. Track Coaches Association Meet and helped outfit the Warriors' new weight training facility.

-- `` We're just not playing very good defense right now,'' said Attleboro High boys' hoop coach Mark Houle, whose Bombardiers take a two-game losing streak to Bishop Stang tonight.

-- Foxboro High hockey coach Brian Dietzel has two girls on the squad, freshman Gwen Rafuse and junior Meghan Fuller, products of the Bridgewater Bandit and Tri-County Saint youth programs.

-- Jake Brederson of the Attleboro Recreation Center will have at least four boxers into the Golden Gloves Tournament which gets underway Jan. 21 in Fall River -- 165-pounder Brian Sanville of Mansfield, 126-pounder Sam Risto, heavyweight Lou Valentine and super heavyweight Steve Jager.
