Tudor combines best of all worlds

NORTH ATTLEBORO -- `` Yours, mine, ours and theirs'' is a good way to describe the decor and furnishings that make up the warm atmosphere of the brick-front Tudor at 34 Broadway.

The `` yours'' and `` mine'' features come individually from Bud Doble, a retired bank executive who has owned the home for the past six years, and from Carol Doble, a receptionist at DeWitt Animal Hospital in town.

The `` ours'' features come from the enhancements and accessories Bud and Carol have added to the home together since they got married three years ago.

The `` theirs'' features are those added by previous owners, which contribute to the charm and coziness of the home, such as the wallpaper in most of the rooms.

Although the home is only 65 years old, it has the character of a much older home, with such things as its oversized kitchen cabinetry, the built-in cabinetry in other rooms, the Dutch door to the patio and the wide brick facing of the living room fireplace.
Having owned two antique Colonial homes before, these are some of the features Bud particularly enjoys.

The home also has several interesting windows, such as the two narrow windows that flank the fireplace and add to the older feel of the home, and the many casement windows throughout the home.

The windows, while still offering the same character in their original framework, have been replaced, however, with new Harvey thermal windows through one of the first projects Bud took on when he purchased the home.

Having tackled the exterior of the home first, Bud also replaced outdoor wood trim with low-maintenance vinyl and added new doors, including garage doors.

For an extra touch of style outside, Bud and Carol had an older stonewall in need of repair replaced last year with a wall of quarry stone along the two sides of the property that form its corner lot on Broadway and Hunting Street.

Inside, Bud and Carol, who still happily consider themselves newlyweds, have recently painted all of the woodwork white, which they say has given a fresh, new look to the well-maintained wallpaper.

In keeping with the older atmosphere of the home, a small, enclosed foyer leads to a spacious 13- by 22-foot living room, where the Dobles have created an antique look.

Both the foyer and living room, as well as the adjacent dining room and back hall, offer the home's original oak floors, which add to the antique atmosphere.

The prominent features of the room are the brick fireplace and the shade of Colonial blue paint the Dobles had added to the wainscoting, window trim, double crown molding, chair rail and mantel woodwork.

The blue woodwork complements the wallpaper provided by previous owners in a delicate floral pattern of blue, mauve and green on off-white.
This is one of Bud's favorite rooms because of the antique atmosphere, and it is just one of the rooms in which he says they have created an eclectic decor, with the personal furnishings and accessories they each added to the home.

One of the most notable pieces in the room is an antique high-back love seat, which Bud's son bought at an auction many years ago. Another is the pine doll cradle on the brick hearth, which Carol's father made many years ago.

In the dining room to the left, the eclectic blend includes an oak dining set, a hutch, sideboards, and one of Bud's favorite pieces -- a Magnavox stereo console, for which he also has original albums ready for listening in a nearby display cabinet.

As a symbol of their life together, Carol has created an arrangement of dried flowers on a pine dry sink. The flowers were all given to her fresh by Bud while they were dating. The flowers are also just one of the ways in which Carol says she was happy to add a woman's touch to the home.

Other such touches include the window treatments throughout the home, which in the dining room are a simple off-white country style curtain, trimmed with matching fringe.

These touches, along with the inviting wallpaper patterns and newly painted woodwork, help to give the home a charming bed and breakfast feel as well.

In the dining room, the curtains are set against a lower wallpaper of mostly hunter green and an upper pattern of green, gold and mauve stripes on beige. This colorful pattern is nicely offset with white window trim, chair rail and crown molding.

An open doorway from the dining room leads to the kitchen, where the Dobles have maintained the home's original character while adding a fresh, new look.

The new look includes a new ceramic tile floor in a gray and mauve blend and a fresh coat of white paint to the woodwork and original cabinetry, along with new hardware of white and brass.

These new features blend well with the white porcelain sink, original cranberry countertops, lower walls of white ceramic tile, trimmed with cranberry, and upper walls of complementary floral wallpaper.

Other features in the kitchen include a built-in ironing board and a large shelved pantry closet.

A hall off the kitchen also leads to another favorite room of Bud's, which he calls the study. This comfortable room has the Dutch door, which leads to the flagstone patio, which forms a cozy courtyard between the house and garage, with white picket fencing that Bud had added.

The master bedroom is located on the first floor and offers a double window overlooking the side yard. Its decor offers a wallpaper pattern in shades of cream, beige, mauve and blue, accented with the freshly painted white woodwork.

There is also a guest room and ceramic tiled bath on the first floor as well as a butler's pantry, with built-in cabinetry.

The second floor offers a cedar hall closet, another full bath and a bedroom Bud refers to as a retreat because of its inviting rustic atmosphere of knotty pine paneling and cozy sitting areas beneath eaves.

In the basement, the Dobles have created a large game room, with beige tweed carpeting, drop ceiling and recessed lighting, and added white louvered doors to several storage areas, including a laundry room and half bath.

The property is listed for $419,900 with Sheila Bennett at Century 21, Ed Pariseau Realtors, at 508-695-2511.
