Hey, bulldogs

SEEKONK -- Bulldogs may grunt and growl, but those of a pedigreed nature used beauty to capture attention at a debut dog show Sunday at the Canine Mastery.

About 30 bulldogs competed at the Bulldog Club of New England's match show, a sort of practice round for future show dogs.

`` They're a unique breed and a beautiful dog in their own sense,'' said Ed Kozatek who sits on the club's executive board.

Rather than the vicious, gnarling dogs people sometimes believe bulldogs to be, purebreds are even tempered and make excellent show dogs because they require little grooming.

Igor, a 3-month old pup who belongs to Jim Cardello of Londonderry, N.H., took the top prize for male bulldog in his age category. Winning might come naturally to Virginia-bred Igor, since his pedigree includes a long list of national show dog champions.

Cardello has owned bulldogs for about 30 years. That's not at all unusual, according to Kozatek.

`` You get hooked for life,'' he said.
