SEEKONK -- About a half-mile stretch of Route 6 near the Rhode Island border was shut down for about an hour early Monday night after a car smashed into the side of Dunkin' Donuts, severing a natural gas connection and meter.
No injuries were reported, but the doughnut shop and an adjacent Wendy's restaurant were evacuated shortly after 6:30.
`` We heard screeching and heard the car hitting the building,'' Dunkin' Donuts employee Jean Gouveia said.
Another employee opened a side door, but Gouveia told her to shut it.
`` I heard the spraying and told her to shut the door, that that was gas fumes,'' Gouveia said, adding she then dialed 911.
The driver of the car was not identified.
Gas fumes permeated the doughnut shop, which was only occupied by the two workers at the time.
