City, area marks Memorial Day
ATTLEBORO -- Communities around the greater Attleboro area Monday remembered the sacrifices made by veterans, with Memorial Day parades and observances in Attleboro, Foxboro, Mansfield, Norfolk, Norton, Rehoboth and Wrentham.
Following a longtime tradition, the city of Attleboro paid double tribute, in South Attleboro and again downtown.
`` We do it in a rather unique way here in Attleboro,'' state Rep. John Lepper, R-Attleboro, said. `` We celebrate it with two parades, half an hour apart, with the same participants in different parts of the city. I don't think that's done anywhere else.''
The city's celebrations started in the morning in South Attleboro, where appreciation seemed to be the theme of the day, as parade participants from veterans to city dignitaries and officials to marching bands were applauded by people along the parade route.
Longtime parade participants included the Attleboro High School and the Portuguese Independent marching bands, the Rehoboth Minutemen and the Regiment Bourbonnais French Revolutionary Rifle Squad, all of whom participated in the downtown Attleboro parade. |
