Mansfield adds name of veteran

MANSFIELD -- A tale of two brothers who served during World War II has taken a happy twist more than 60 years later.

Cortland L. Bessom's name has been added to the Keach Memorial's World War II and Korean War sections, correcting what his family and Veterans Agent John Hogan are calling an oversight.

Edward F. Bessom Square, the corner of Park Row and South Main Street, is named for the soldier's younger brother, a seaman fatally wounded on his ship in 1945.

Cortland Bessom was an airman, first during World War II and then during the Korean War. He served 25 years in the military before retiring to Newport News, Va.

But when son Dave showed his wife Terri around his father's hometown nearly five years ago, and reached the corner of Union and West streets, they discovered the Keach Memorial was missing a name.
