Couple foils scam
NORTON -- An elderly couple foiled a telephone scam before being bilked of almost $8,000.
In the recent incident, a caller told the couple they had won a Social Security grant.
Then, asked for -- and got -- the couple's personal banking account numbers and Social Security numbers, allegedly so the grant funds could be deposited.
But then the couple wised up.
`` They were able to get to the bank and close their accounts,'' Norton Human Services Executive Director Jim Dinsel said.
