Mansfield cleanup funded

MANSFIELD -- The long-abandoned Hatheway and Patterson Superfund site would be cleaned up beginning next year under a $12.1 million plan approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The cleanup, approved after four years of study and evaluation, would involve removing about 4,000 cubic yards of dioxin- and oil-contaminated soil and stockpiling soil contaminated with arsenic on the site. The plan also calls for long-term monitoring of the nearby Rumford River as well as local groundwater.

The EPA would also place controls on future use of the land and groundwater to safeguard health of area residents.
