The Powerball lottery jackpot in Rhode Island has hit $365 million, but loyal customers are still buying their Mega Millions tickets in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Lottery said sales have actually gone up in the Bay State, rather than lose business to neighboring Rhode Island.
`` It seems everyone has jackpot fever,'' said Beth Bresnahan, spokeswoman for the Lottery.
She said sales are up 10 percent over projections during the current Mega Millions cycle spanning about 5 1/sub 2 weeks, or 11 drawings of the game.
Lottery outlets along the state border are not losing business to Powerball and are still drawing customers from outside Massachusetts, she said.
Tony DeSousa, manager of Hill's Package Store in Seekonk, just over the Rhode Island line, confirmed Bresnahan's comments.
He said his regular customers from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island are buying the usual number of tickets.
`` They're still buying Mega Millions. I haven't seen any effect,'' DeSousa said. `` The volume goes up with the jackpot. I hope it keeps going up because it creates sales.''
Although the Mega Millions jackpot pales in comparison to Powerball this week, it is still a respectable $145 million, enough to attract casual players.
The jackpot climbs whenever there is a drawing and no one wins.
Both Powerball and Mega Millions have gone without a winner for several weeks.
Mega Millions and Powerball attract a lot of players with their bigger jackpots because the tickets are sold in several states, rather than just one.
The Mega Millions drawing is tonight; the Powerball drawing is Saturday.
