State asked to survey North land
Top Headlines Interim Town Administrator Mark Fisher said the town has received a letter that the com mission has asked the Execu tive Office of Environmental Affairs to ensure that an arche ological survey of the property be conducted. The letter requests an `` intensive survey'' to locate and identify any archeological resources on the property. The survey would be conducted as part of the property's environmental impact statement prepared by the developers as they go through the planning review process for the site. Cumberland Realty Trust is proposing a 110-home subdivision for the 102-acre property, which is between Cumberland Avenue, Cushman Road and Remington Drive. The project is currently before the planning board. It was more than a year ago that residents in the Adamdale area began raising questions about whether a Native American burial ground could be found on the property. Anne Hickman of Cumberland Avenue presented the planning board with research in September 2004 showing that Native Americans had been present in an area of the property known as Goat Rock. Ann Chapdelaine, chairwoman of the town's historical commission, said the state's interest in the project was probably triggered by the paperwork already filed by the developer. Chapdelaine said that her commission has received many phone calls from residents interested in learning whether there is a Native American burial ground or other archeological artifacts on the property. `` We're not sure if there is anything out there,'' Chapdelaine said. `` But it's very possible because we have some major archeological sites in the surrounding area.''
