North hoop star injured in accident

NORTH ATTLEBORO -- A starter on the North Attleboro High School girls' basketball team is in a Boston hospital after a two-vehicle accident on Route 1 Friday morning.

Senior Alexandra `` Allie'' Perry, 17, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the crash at the junction of Route 1 and Smith Street in North Attleboro shortly after 7 a.m.

She was driving to school and had her brother, Daniel, 14, a freshman at the high school, in the car with her. The brother was not injured, fire officials said.

Dara Perry, Alexandra Perry's mother, said her daughter suffered from aruptured spleen, a broken pelvis, a chipped hip, and a broken tailbone. Friday night she was in the orthopedic unit at Children's Hospital, where she is expected to remain for at least five days. She was initially taken by ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, then transferred to the Boston hospital, where it was determined the spleen rupture could be treated without surgery.

`` She's in a lot of pain, but she is holding up well,'' Dara Perry said. `` She has a lot of family, friends and support from her team. The outpouring of love and support has been tremendous.''

John DelBonis, Perry's coach, is equally hopeful.

`` The doctors are very optimistic, very confident that she will make a full recovery,'' DelBonis said.

Perry's team is scheduled today at 1 p.m. to play Oliver Ames High School in Easton in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Division 2-South Tournament at Oliver Ames. The game will go on as scheduled, and DelBonis said the Rocketeers have dedicated their efforts in honor of their fallen teammate.

`` We had a team meeting today before practice and obviously, we were all a little sad,'' DelBonis said Friday. `` The kids all love Allie so much and they know how much she loves to play, and it's just so tough that she won't be able to play in such a big game as this one.

`` But the fact that she's going to be fine, the kids are fine because of that,'' he added.

The players were going to visit Perry in the hospital, DelBonis said.

`` Allie brings intensity like no one else,'' said co-captain Heather Meyer, `` but we will be playing for her.''

Principal Robert Gay said `` Allie Perry is a super kid. She's always got a smile on her face. She's a good ballplayer.'' Perry has been a member of the North Attleboro varsity for three seasons, and a starter for two years.

She has scored 327 career points since joining the team as a sophomore, and this season, was averaging 6.6 points a game as a small forward following Thursday night's MIAA Division 2-South first-round game against Hingham, a 67-35 North Attleboro victory. She scored four points and tied teammate Nicole Matte for game-high rebounding honors with eight as North improved to 16-5 on the season.
