Disabled man bilked

ATTLEBORO -- Police say a Pawtucket man has repeatedly victimized a mentally disabled man, most recently barging into his home, stealing credit cards and ringing up thousands of dollars in bills this winter.

This is no ordinary case, outraged investigators say.

`` We try not to take things personally. But all the guys in this division were upset by this -- when you victimize somebody who can't defend themselves,'' Attleboro police Detective Jeffrey Peavey said Tuesday.

The alleged victim is paralyzed on his left side and is under the daily care of a visiting nurse, police said.

`` Somebody informed (the suspect) of the victim's condition, and he saw an opportunity and took it, and continued to take these opportunities whenever they were available,'' Peavey said. John Conley, 39, of 28 Harrison St. in Pawtucket was arraigned Monday in Attleboro District Court on numerous charges, including credit card fraud over $250, entering a dwelling for a felony by false pretenses, and two counts of attempting to commit a crime.

Those charges stem from an alleged incident in late January, when police say Conley barged into the man's home three days before he was to undergo surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Conley allegedly pushed his way through the front door and began walking around the home outside the man's line of sight.

The man discovered his credit cards had been stolen when one card company called to say his Discover card was used at Raynh Conley returned to the victim's home on Feb. 11, police say.

Police say they are familiar with Conley and they identified him from store surveillance videos.

Not guilty pleas were entered on Conley's behalf on the following charges: larceny over $250; larceny under $250; breaking and entering for felony, person in fear; identity fraud; and larceny over $250 from a person who is 60 or older or disabled.

Judge James Sullivan ordered Conley held on $10,000 bail, and continued the case to March 27.

Police say Conley first showed up on the man's doorstep more than six years ago with a hard luck story that he needed money to buy diapers for his infant daughter.

The man gave Conley $20, police said, then hired him briefly to do yard work, although he said he didn't want to.

`` I didn't like him, but I didn't know how to get rid of him. He was aggressive,'' the man told police.
