" Hollywood is by far the most multicultural place I’ve been to. Its diversity stands in stark contrast to what I’m used to back East. Our hotel is on the Sunset Strip, in front of the TV Guide building. Mark and I walked the strip for a mile or two last night in search of an everyday-type burgers and fries type restaurant that didn't fall into the fast food category. Turns out they don’t do everyday here. We ended up at a Mexican restaurant across the street, where I asked a bartender named Fermin if he’d watched “American Idol” on the TV screens in the bar that night, and he responded with “American what?” It's an interesting collision or intersection of cultures, to say the least. At the same time there’s an enormous culture of consumerism here. Stores upon stores line virtually every street. Nearly every guest at the hotel walks in with bags in hand, full of something recently bought. And then there's "American Idol" just down the street, where "unknowns" vie for the chance to become national stars. I wonder how it's all related. I think the common thread could lie in a word: opportunity. "
