One tough clerk

ATTLEBORO -- After being robbed 14 times, Mohammad T. Khan has developed a keen sense about people who walk through the doors of the stores in which he works.

That sense was firing on all cylinders just before sunrise Sunday when a man approached him outside the 7-Eleven on North Main Street as he cleaned up the parking lot during down time on the overnight shift.

The guy was friendly, but Khan knew bet ter.

`` My heart said this guy is doubtful,'' Khan recounted Monday, noting the robber offered to hold the door for him as they went in.

`` I look at them and I can tell they are doubtful,'' said the 47-year-old Pakistani immigrant through broken English. `` I know. It's my experience.'' Khan was right.

Once in the store the man told Khan he had a gun and to give him money.

The words were familiar.

It was the 15th time Khan has been robbed in his 10-year stint as a convenience store clerk, including two times last week alone.

Early last Wednesday he didn't need his finely honed sense to tell that the two men who came into the 7-Eleven were trouble.

They were masked and brandishing a samurai-type sword and a knife.

They got away with $300, but were later arrested.

Meanwhile, the alleged robber on Sunday gave himself up to North Attleboro police on Monday -- much to Khan's relief. He's always afraid they'll come back, he said.

`` I feel better because he's arrested,'' said Khan as he began another overnight shift shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

Khan has worked as a clerk in string of 7-Eleven stores since coming to the United States about 10 years ago. While he's had a rough week in Attleboro, he had a terrifying 18 months in Malden where he was robbed 12 times, he said.

He started out in a Plymouth 7-Eleven, and was only robbed once there. And then Khan worked in a Cape Cod 7-Eleven where he wasn't robbed at all.

Despite the robberies, Khan smiles readily and is friendly on the outside.

He talks enthusiastically about leisure pursuits of history and old movies.

But what he feels inside is different, said the Mechanic Street resident who moved to the city about eight months ago because it's `` more peaceful.''

The fear doesn't go away.

`` Sunday I was very scared. (The robber) had a look on his face,'' said Khan pointing to his head to indicate craziness. `` I'm still scared and I'm upset mentally.''

Fortunately though, Khan hasn't been seriously hurt, although he suffered a cut wrist during one robbery.

And he hasn't thought about quitting.

He likes his boss who is helping him get treated for an illness, he said.

But Khan also acknowledged his prospects are limited because of a lack of education and the lack of a driver's license.

So he plans to keep showing up for work and when he's not cashing out customers at midnight he'll keep reading about one of his favorite historical figures -- Abraham Lincoln, or watching his favorite old movie -- Ben-Hur.

His favorite actors are Charlton Heston and Marlon Brando.

The actors played the kind of tough guys who would be useful for protection in robbery situations at the local 7-Eleven, but Khan said he'll rely on higher power for safety.

`` I'm not too much religious, but I believe in God and God helps everybody,'' he said.
