GOBIS: KP teams become nomads
Top Headlines That is because with expansion of the KP facility underway and safety concerns abounding, the Warriors are on the road -- for practice, for games, adding what Athletic Director Chad Kelley figures to be about $20,000 to the budget due to transportation costs. The KP varsity baseball team practices at the Middle School and plays at the Pond Street complex in Norfolk, the KP softball team plays at the Plainville Athletic League field, the KP tennis teams play their matches at Dean College in Franklin and the KP track teams have an `` all away'' schedule of dual meets. `` The track is in a state of disrepair, so we find our way around,'' said KP track coach Scott Kramer of the search for practice sites. `` We're making due with what we've got.'' Ed Moran's KP varsity baseball team practices at the Middle School, while the junior varsity team is at Pond Street, to accommodate youth teams that use that facility. To make matters worse, a new batting cage, purchased by the KP Boosters Club, for the Warrior baseball team was vandalized at the Middle School . . . With so many student-athletes on family vacations this week, many athletic directors do not even attempt to schedule many events. But as one veteran tennis coach said, `` the only excuse that I can acknowledge is a college interview. I can understand that, I don't have a problem with that.'' . . . The track at Attleboro High's Tozier-Cassidy Field has been patched up and will be the site of some home Bombardier meets for the duration of the season, `` but, it needs some major work,'' said Bombardier boys' coach Kevin Deschenes of the likelihood of a major fund expenditure to replace the entire surface . . . One Bombardier with a big upside is senior and soccer goalkeeper star Phil Nelson, excelling in the hurdles and jumps during the outdoor track season. `` I'd love to see what he would do in football,'' said Deschenes, also the AHS football coach, `` the kid is as tough as nails'' . . . `` That's a strong side of the field for us,'' related Bishop Feehan High softball coach Kris Gerrior of having junior Amy Gordon at first base and junior Amanda Coleman in right field. `` A lot of balls are hit that way and they're strong'' . . . Not so strong at the plate has been Deb Carreiro's Attleboro High softball team, which is averaging just two hits per game. `` We have a very young team, we've very inexperienced,'' she said . . . Paul Sullivan's North Attleboro High baseball team has the `` help wanted'' sign out for a first baseman after Mike Bodinski suffered a broken collarbone in a collision with Attleboro High's Steve Boyle in making a tag during the fifth inning of Monday's game. `` We lose a good pitcher, a good bat, a solid defender -- that's a tough loss for us'' . . . `` She's got a cannon for an arm, she's very accurate,'' related Seekonk High softball coach Gary Miller of rightfielder Cait Corry . . . Dighton-Rehoboth High pitcher Heath Wasylow walked just six batters all of last season, but walked three Monday against Bourne . . . `` He's done such a great job, moving over from doubles,'' said North Attleboro High boys' tennis coach Derek Folan of senior captain and No. 3 singles player Dan Scanlon . . . `` He's hitting the ball with so much power, kind of what you expect from a kid who has started since his sophomore year,'' Mansfield High baseball coach Dave Worthley lauded the bat of Matt Birnie . . . North Attleboro High softball coach Christine Ahern didn't have to think twice about promoting and moving Kali Barrett up from the junior varsity last season to starting catcher. `` She's such a great athlete and she has a great arm.'' . . . Lynn Miller's Wheaton College men's tennis team (9-3)is currently ranked No. 6 in the ITA-Northeast region with No. 1 player Sean Daly, a sophomore from Miami being 8-3 and No. 2 player Payum Payman of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., a junior, having 85 career wins . . . Three Foxboro natives, all seniors, are the starting catchers for their respective high school varsity teams -- Brendan Greeeley at Foxboro High, Chris O'Neil at Bishop Feehan and Jeff Lienek at Xaverian ... Former King Philip High tennis player Shannon Steele, a junior and No. 5 singles player at Assumption College, won a pair of singles matches, a pair of doubles matches and was named to the All-Northeast 10 Conference weekly team . . . Hafiz Greigre, the Bryant College track star from Attleboro, won the 400 meter dash at the Solomon Husky Invitational at 48.81 seconds and was a member of the second place 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams . . . Emily Archer, the four-year starter at third base for Peter Peloquin's Norton High softball team, has inked a letter of intent to play at Division 2 Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut . . . Former King Philip High wrestler Ray Moore, a freshman at RI College, finished the winter season with a 17-14 record (five pins) in the 184-pound class . . .
