Idling MBTA trains will move south

ATTLEBORO -- A commuter rail layover station in the Dodgeville area could move to Pawtucket by late June, a Rhode Island transportation official said Monday.

The layover station off Oakhill Avenue has been the source of noise complaints for years. Trains idle at the station overnight, disturbing the sleep of nearby residents.

Rhode Island agreed more than a decade ago to take the station in exchange for expanded commuter rail service to Boston.

Chuck Alves, deputy director of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, said a new $19.5 million station is scheduled to open in Pawtucket by the end of June.

He said the station has been constructed with $11 million in Rhode Island funds and work is nearing completion on $8.5 million in new signals and other improvements by Amtrak. News that the station is finally moving to Pawtucket should be welcomed by residents in Attleboro's Dodgeville area, but they have heard these promises before.

State Rep. John Lepper, R-Attleboro, said he has been pushing for the move for more than 10 years.

Alves said there were a number of issues that had to be resolved before the new station could be completed.

Both the Rhode Island and Massachusetts legislatures had to approve the plan, the station had to be funded, and state officials had to get Amtrak to move on the project.

While the layover station in Attleboro has been a bother for residents, Lepper said he does not believe there will similar problems in Pawtucket because the new station is located in an industrial area.
