Lacrosse all-stars named

MANSFIELD — They were virtually unbeatable, save for one match, and by the mere margin of one goal.

The King Philip Regional High girls’ lacrosse team ventured further than none other in the Warriors’ brief history, being unbeaten through its first 19 games of the 2006 season, advancing to the semifinals of the MIAA Division 1 State Tournament.

Six members of that tribe, including the state’s leading scorer, Kelly Pasquantonio, are among the elite players selected to the 2006 Sun Chronicle All-Star Lacrosse Team.

The half-dozen wondrous Warriors, are joined on the All-Sun Chronicle roster by five members of the MIAA Division 2 South Boys’ Tournament quarterfinalist Mansfield High boys’ team, four from MIAA Division 2 Tournament-qualifying King Philip High’s boys’ team, two from the MIAA Division 3 Tournament-qualifying Tri-County High boys’ team and three from Foxboro High, in just its third season as a varsity boys’ program.

The All-Sun Chronicle roster includes 62-goal scorers Connor Hayes and Matt Kiley from Mansfield, Ryan Watson and Corey Miller of Tri-County, who combined for 86 goals, King Philip High’s 47-goal scorer Sam Wilcox and Mansfield High’s productive pair of 38-goal scorer Mike Morrill and 33-goal scorer P.J. Powers. Such similar gaudy goal-scoring enabled the King Philip girls’ team to prosper in front of superb sophomore goalie Katie Florence with All-Sun Chronicle selections Mary Pasquantonio (67), Kerry Eaton (36), Allie Cuozzo (35) and Kara Basque (27) complementing the 86 goals and 70 assists compiled by Kelly Pasquantonio.

Coach Mike Vitelli’s King Philip girls’ team concluded the regular season at 15-0-1 and earned the No. 1 seed for the Division 1 South Tournament.

In addition, the Mansfield High boys’ team concluded the regular season at 15-2 and took the No. 6 seed for the Division 2 Tournament, beating Norwood and Concord-Carlisle before losing to Walpole in the quarterfinals.

The King Philip boys’ team took home a dozen wins and the Tri-County Cougars secured 11 wins.

But those numbers and wins paled in comparison to what the Warriors of King Philip achieved, eventually losing a one-goal decision to eventual MIAA Division 1 State champion Framingham 7-6.

En route to the semifinal round of the state tournament, KP beat No. 8 Newton Norton by eight goals, beat No. 4 Dartmouth by 12 goals and beat No. 2 seeded Wellesley by an eight-goal margin to win the Division 1 South Sectional Tournament.
