City's renovations on hold
Top Headlines Donald Smyth, chairman of the Attleboro Redevelopment Authority, said Mayor Kevin Dumas is working on a finance plan. However, all concerned want to make sure they have all the neces sary information before going public with it, he said. Instead of presenting details to the city council next month, officials will continue to fine tune the proposal, Smyth said. He said the redevelopment author ity is still waiting for some informa tion from the city assessor's office. The redevelopment authority wants the city to commit to earmark ing future growth in tax revenues toward paying for the project. The idea needs council approval, and Smyth said Dumas will prepare a presentation for the council. Dumas could not be reached for comment. The proposal involves moving an existing highway garage and some businesses near the parking lot off South Main and Wall streets to clear the way for condominiums. A new parking garage for commuters would also be part of the package. The idea is to get more people living in the downtown area who would need services, thus creating a market for downtown businesses. The city would clear the land and clean up any contamination, while bids from private developers would be sought for constructing the condominiums.
