Naughton kicks off campaign

Claire Naughton has formally kicked off her campaign for state representative, promising to work to increase state aid to local communities.
Naughton, a Democrat, is running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Virginia Coppola, R-Foxboro.
In remarks to more than 100 supporters, Naughton said more state aid is needed to fund schools along with police and fire services.
She said the state has a budget surplus that it should be sharing with cities and towns.
`` The state has the money, and I am the one who will fight to bring it into our communities,'' she said.
Naughton, a retired teacher, said her formal announcement came as she was receiving endorsements from the Massachusetts Federation of Teachers and the Boston Teachers Union.
In an interview, she said towns such as Norton are being shortchanged by the state when it comes to aid.
She said a new school funding formula is needed to make sure all communities are treated fairly.
More state aid also would help take some of the pressure off local property taxes, she said.
Naughton said improving commuter rail service would be another priority if she is elected.
Naughton is running in a three-way race in the Sept. 19 Democratic primary against Paul Feeney and Matthew Donovan.
All three candidates are from Foxboro.
The winner of the primary will face Republican Jay Barrows of Mansfield in the Nov. 7 general election. |
