Pair held in store holdup
BY STU SKERKER/SUN CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT
ATTLEBORO -- Two city teenagers early Saturday allegedly entered a convenience store masked, beat the clerk's head with a copper pipe and a stick, and then fled with cash before police arrested them minutes later about a half-mile away.
Police allege it was the second time in three weeks that the teenagers robbed the 7-Eleven, 110 North Main St., and beat the same clerk Mohammad T. Khan.
The first time, on July 15, the suspects allegedly sprayed Khan's face with wasp and hornet spray before fleeing with cash.
Police charged Rhyan Vaughan, 19, and Fred Baskin, 17, both of 10 Water St., with two counts each of armed robbery while masked and two counts each of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Each teen is being held on $50,000 cash bail and is scheduled for arraignment in Attleboro District Court on Monday.
Khan was holding his bloodied head when police arrived at the store around 5 a.m., shortly after the robbery. He was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was treated and released, police said.
Police allege that the two teenagers entered the 7-Eleven with their faces masked.
One teenager allegedly carried a 4-foot section of copper pipe and the other allegedly was armed with a stick, estimated to be 4-feet long with a handle made out of masking tape at one end.
Police alleged that one teen raised the copper pipe over his head, smashing Khan in the head at least twice.
The teenagers then allegedly fled the store with cash.
Within minutes of the beating and robbery, Officer Craig Fonseca allegedly spotted the pair in front of their home, at 10 Water St. They were arrested by Fonseca, along with Officers Robert Mulhern, Raymond Russas, Gilbert Bechtel and Sgt. Wayne Bennett.
Police said they sent cruisers to the Water Street area immediately after yesterday's robbery was reported because the suspects in the July robbery also headed towards that neighborhood.
During questioning, Vaughan and Baskin allegedly admitted to police they were also responsible for a robbery at the store and an assault on Khan on July 15.
The teens also allegedly led police to where the weapons where thrown. One weapon was found in a dumpster near the convenience store and the other was found on Water Street, police said.
Detective Lt. John Otrando is investigating the July incident and Detective Russell Castro is investigating Saturday's assault and subsequent robbery.
Khan, 47, of Mechanic Street, has been robbed nearly 20 times in his 10-year stint as a convenience store, including at least four times just in 2006.
He was the clerk when the store was robbed twice within a week this past March. |
