Fox bites pair in Rehoboth

REHOBOTH -- Two people were bitten by a fox on separate occasions Saturday, an animal that police believe they shot that night.

The fox is expected to be tested for rabies, police Sgt. Richard Shailor said Saturday night. Police plan to call Rehoboth's animal control officer.

One bite was reported on Water Street, where police later shot a fox, at 9 a.m., Shailor said. The victim went to a local hospital for treatment.

The second bite was reported by a resident looking for the animal control officer, Shailor said. Details about the incident were not available late Saturday night.

About 8 p.m., police returned to Water Street for a third fox report.

Police shot and killed the fox, and believe it was the culprit from the morning incident, Shailor said.

The Attleboro area has not had a report of a rabid fox in more than a year.

In April 2005, a rabid fox bit a 3-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy in Attleboro before police shot it.
