D'ARCONTE: Rotary big help with book drive

When I found out that they were trying to start a library for adolescent residents at Taunton State Hospital and put the call out for book donations, because I thought it was a good cause, a lot of people pitched in -- and, now, one organization.

The Attleboro Rotary Club has dipped into its discretionary funds and bought more than 50 books for the library, including two complete Harry Potter sets and a Lord of the Rings series.

`` In all, we were able to obtain all the books that were on the suggested list,'' wrote Tedi Hornung, Rotary secretary.

So a big thank you goes out to the Rotary Club for stepping up, and to its committee that administers discretionary funds for deciding that `` this library was an effort worthy of this contribution,'' in Tedi's words.

Another big thank-you has to go out to Borders in North Attleboro, which gave Rotary a discount on the books.

This major contribution and a few other books that came in bring our grand total so far to 341, but they can use more books at the state hospital and multiple copies of the same book are OK, too.

You can drop books at our 34 South Main St. office in Attleboro or get them directly to Taunton State Hospital at 60 Hodges Ave. Extension, Taun-ton, 02780.

We've adopted the creation of the library as a Day of Caring project for the United Way of Greater Attleboro-Taunton.

Thanks for the cuddlers

Another bear was dropped off anonymously last week, bringing our teddy bear total to date to 4,854.

The bears go to the Attleboro Area Council for Children which in turn gives to local police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews to give to children in crises.

Thanks for the papers

`` Just returned from the Pennsylvania Dutch country. Thought you might like a paper from there,'' writes Rita Gallego of Taunton. `` It's beautiful country and very peaceful. My sister (Gloria Wambolt) and I enjoyed it.

`` We are the sisters of Maurice Marcoux, who works as pressroom manager at The Sun Chronicle.

`` My friends and I enjoy The Silver City Bulletin,'' she adds. `` My grandson has been featured three times in it.''

Thanks to Curt Fransden and Kathy Jost of Attleboro for copies of the Pioneer Press and the Minnesota China Tribune that they brought back from a trip to the St. Paul, Minn., area where they visited Curt's mother, shopped and visited Minehaha Falls and Como Park.

`` The trees have already begun to turn -- it should be an early winter,'' writes Andrea Soucy in a note with a copy of a paper from New Hampshire.

`` And the feds arrested a Lyndonville man for growing pot! All the crazies are not in Massachusetts.''

`` We spent our usual holiday weekend in Gloucester, which is always quite relaxing for us,'' writes news editor Larry Kessler of North Attleboro, who vacationed with wife Lynne and daughters Ari and Alana. `` Due to the rain, we didn't get to see the Saturday night fireworks across the harbor, but we had a nice time. I got much slower this year in my traditional 25K,'' he adds, `` finishing almost last at 3:36:23.''

See you next week.
