Ayla out with her first CD
Top Headlines The 18-year-old, who placed 13th in the competition but won a loyal fan base with her genuine delivery and torrid work ethic, is releasing her first ever CD, "Forward," at stores ranging from Wal-Mart to Strawberries as well as a bevy of online outlets. A total of 50,000 copies have already been printed, according to Brown's father, state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham. The album has been available digitally for the past week through iTunes. "Forward," from indie Double Deal Brand, contains 11 songs including the title track and "If I Was A River" which she performed on "American Idol." She also contributed lyrics to two songs including "Thanks to You," a heartfelt nod to her family, friends and fans. With the exception of the Britney-esque "I Quit," Brown's debut comes across as more sophisticated and mature-sounding than the typical Idol teen diva. An all-star cast of songwriters, including Grammy winners Dianne Warrean and Tommy Sims as well as Ruby Amanfu, Jonatha Brooke and Phil Thornally, made sure there was plenty of material to work with. The album also includes an unexpected cameo by Brown's father, who provides the voice of the announcer calling a buzzer-beater during a basketball game on "Breaking Away." Brown's CD comes swathed in a highly personal package. Photos of Brown for the CD jacket came from family pictures taken in Mexico, her father said. Liner photos taken during the production process and at personal appearances, as well a child's crayon drawing, were contributed by fans and supporters. While Brown is prohibited by NCAA rules from doing more than basic interviews to support her record, her father said the young singer is scheduled to appear today on the Sallie Jessie Raphael radio show. A highly positive review is reportedly also in the works at American Idol Magazine, the print companion to the TV program. Scott Brown praised the production team on "Forward," saying the process of recording the album was well-tailored to his busy 18-year-old daughter's schedule. She is now attending Boston College on a basketball scholarship. "Dealing with an independent label was great because they were very flexible and there was very little pressure," said her father. Nevertheless, recording had to be completed before Ayla Brown entered college to comply with NCAA rules. RICK FOSTER can be reached at rfoster@thesunchronicle.com or 508-236-0428.
