ATTLEBORO - A South Attleboro woman pregnant with twins arrived at her second-floor home Tuesday to find it filled with smoke, but was able to get out safely with her 2-year-old son.
Now Anita Ouimet and her family, who live at 353 Robinson Ave., are staying elsewhere until the home is repaired.
Deputy Fire Chief Scott Jacques estimated the damage at $40,000.
Fire confined to kitchen
The fire was confined to the second-floor kitchen and the attic, with smoke and water damage throughout the house.
He ruled the fire accidental, apparently caused by combustible material placed too close to a heating source.
Jacques said a neighbor called 911 shortly after 1 p.m.
Ouimet said a laundry basket may have been left atop a gas heater.
"I just smelled burnt plastic. I saw smoke, and ran out of the house," she said.
Ouimet, who said she is 7 1/2 months' pregnant, said she discovered the blaze when she opened the door to her home, then fled with her young son, Tyler.
