DARTMOUTH — If there is a perfect time for the Attleboro High football team to be facing its toughest and most important game of the year, it is now.
Following an 0-4 start, the Bombardiers have reeled off four consecutive wins, including an impressive 34-14 victory over Bishop Feehan a week ago.
"We have gotten better every week," said Attleboro head coach Kevin Deschenes, whose team has not lost since a heart-breaking 22-21 setback to Durfee on Sept. 29. "Our goal was not to be stagnant or take a step back. We always wanted to move forward."
"We can't look back to beginning of the season. We have to look toward the end of the season. At 0-4 everyone could have gotten discouraged, but no one did. We feel good about the way we are playing right now. The kids responded to the adversity and did not give up. The kids get all the credit for the turnaround."
Now, Attleboro faces its toughest challenge of the year in Dartmouth, which is undefeated at 7-0 and leads the Old Colony League with a 3-0 mark. The Bombardiers enter the showdown with a 4-4 overall record and 1-1 mark in the league.
If the Indians defeat Attleboro tonight, they will win the OCL title and advance to the MIAA Division 1 Playoffs. If the Bombardiers win and they win next week at home against Barnstable, they will capture the league crown and advance to the playoffs.
"This would be a great win for our program," said Deschenes. "We control our own destiny for the first time since 1999. The kids know what is ahead of them. We will have to play our best football of the season to win this game. The guys are excited about what is in front of them."
Dartmouth's diverse offense has averaged almost 30 points a game. It is is led by senior quarterback Tom Pereira. Another player the Attleboro defense will definitely have to keep in check is junior tailback Jordan Todman, who has rushed for over 1,100 yards and leads Eastern Mass. Division 1 in scoring with 16 touchdowns and 96 points.
"They have a very balanced offense," said Deschenes. "Pereira is the returning starter and is a good quarterback. They run the ball very well. The big thing with Todman is that you have to corral him. When you get to him you have to get him down. Todman is like Nick Schwieger from Bishop Feehan. Once he gets through the pile, he is gone."
"They also have a good line that averages about 250 pounds. They are the biggest team up front we have faced this year. We can't give up the big play and have to keep their quarterback in the pocket. We have to make them earn everything they get."
Durfee at Bishop Feehan
The Shamrocks, who are now 2-6 overall, are looking to bounce back after consecutive difficult losses to Bishop Stang and Attleboro. Unfortunately, Bishop Feehan will be without the services of standout junior tailback Nick Schwieger, who will not play because of a bruised leg. The Shamrocks face a Hilltopper team that is 2-5 overall with a pair of one-point victories over Falmouth and Attleboro.
Medway at Norton
This is an interesting game for the Lancers, who are 6-2 but struggled to beat Millis last week on the road. Norton opened the season 6-0, but then suffered consecutive losses to Medfield and Holliston to drop out of the race in the Tri-Valley League. The Lancers (4-2 in the TVL) will have to be ready for a Tiger team that is 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Apponequet at Seekonk
It wasn't easy, but the Warriors broke a three-game losing streak with a victory over Bishop Connolly at home last week. Seekonk will host its third consecutive night game against the Lakers, who are 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the South Coast Conference.
The three loses by Apponequet this season came to teams (Dartmouth, Bourne and Wareham) with a combined 20-2 record. The Warriors are 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
A win by Seekonk tonight ensures the team at least a .500 season.
Dighton-Rehoboth at Bourne
The Falcons could put a crimp in the plans of the Canalmen to win the SCC champion. Bourne is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The only loss for the Canalmen this year came 27-21 in the season opener to Eastern Athletic Conference power Bishop Stang.
This is the second straight game against one of the leaders in the SCC for the Falcons, who fell to the Vikings last week and are now 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Nantucket at Tri-County
With last week's poor weather, the Cougars had a short week but a good one following a victory over Diman Voke on Monday afternoon. Tri-County, which recorded its other victory against Old Colony earlier in the season, is 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Mayflower League.
On Saturday afternoon, the Cougars will face a Whaler squad that is 4-4 overall and is 2-1 in the league.
Nantucket has a couple of impressive victories this year over Southeastern (42-28) and Old Colony (44-0).
