ATTLEBORO - They stopped the Bombardiers' unbeaten streak earlier in the season and stopped the Attleboro High School field hockey team from advancing in the MIAA Division 1-South Tournament.
"They gave us our only loss in the (Old Colony League) and that added to our fuel, we wanted another chance," said Barnstable High coach Beth Doherty, whose Red Raiders needed 83 minutes and 22 seconds to score a goal against the Bombardiers Thursday.
When it did occur, Casey Ostrander making a steal of the ball on the left flank and feeding it to Lynne Donoghue with 6:38 remaining in the second overtime period, it sent Barnstable home a 1-0 winner in the dramatic first round tournament match.
The No. 8 Bombardiers and No. 9 Red Raiders had taken victories on each other's soil during the regular OCL season, "so we knew coming in what we had to do," said Attleboro coach Sue Hamilton.
The Bombardiers (11-5-3), behind the stellar hitting and defending by senior midfielder Kim Urko, generated a free-wheeling attack, especially through the first half. However, the Bombardiers' all-out effort to take advantage of home turf and take a lead during the initial 30 minutes lost a bit of its luster as Attleboro depleted its energy and was unable to sustain a consistent and serious attack through the second half, through the first 15 minute overtime period and then into the 7-on-7 second overtime period.
"Conditioning was a bit of a factor," admitted Doherty of the wide expanses of field left with four players taken off for the second overtime session. "That's why we run corner sprints and we practice it (7-on-7) all week."
The Red Raiders scheme was simple, have junior stonewall defender Samantha Caplice take possession of the ball and whack it forward - then having either Ostrander, a sophomore or Donoghue, a junior, play chase.
The Bombardiers nearly foiled that plan in the very first minute of the second overtime period when sophomore Carly Barone smashed a cross out of the left corner that perilously crossed the Barnstable goalmouth, where no one was able to get a stick onto it.
After that, Barnstable perked up the pressure with three penalty corners and Kristen Logan just missing on drives wide to the left of Attleboro sophomore goalie Kendra Sczoski in the third and seventh minutes.
Barnstable's match-winner, by Donoghue from 10 yards out, zipped into the lower left corner.
Attleboro generated seven penalty corners in the first half, five in the second half and three more in the first overtime period, but Barnstable goalie Danielle Cotellessa never faced danger. The Bombardiers were close, but Caplice and the Red Raider back line were always in position for clearances.
In the first overtime period, Urko had two consecutive free hits in the fifth minute, two more in the 14th minute and in the waning seconds, a penalty corner, taken by Brittani Barone with Urko lacing a drive went just wide right.
In the second half, Urko had two long (30 yards plus) free hits in the fourth and 13th minutes which Cotellessa made saves upon. Barone had two consecutive penalty corners in the 17th minute, a deflection by Ali Parker on the second chance skidding by. And in the final 90 seconds, Barone had a free hit and Heather Fontaine had a penalty corner, but no potential game-winning shot could be taken.
"We pressured their offense a majority of the time," said Doherty of Barnstable being aggressive and using its speed on the flanks. "We were prepared to play them."
So too was Attleboro. "We were hoping for them to make one mistake," said Hamilton. It never happened.
