Almost 250 servicemen and women will be kept a little warmer this winter, as local seniors have been knitting hats to send overseas.
The knitted hats are made to fit under the helmets of troops stationed in Iraq in a nationwide effort.
Local knitters, including both the Plainville and North Attleboro Council on Aging's weekly knitting groups, have been producing the colorful skull cups.
Almost 250 have been knitted and crocheted by local members.
Pamela Hunt, director of the council on aging, said the idea of knitting hats was brought to the senior center by Mary Boyers, who read about the nationwide knitting effort in a newspaper article.
"There is a pattern available so the ladies can knit the hats at home. We've had a great response and have already collected almost 250," Hunt said.
Regulars in the Council on Aging's Wednesday morning knitting and crochet group are Doris McCallister, Mary Boyers, Gertrude Kiermindahl, Anita DeBlois, Jackie Gardner, Grace Ankra.
Others who have participated by donating yarn or knitting hats at home are Maria Alix, Debbie Barac, Rose Bayer, Pat Betts, Paulette Bolton, Jane Brady, Sue Connelly, Martha Cummins, Doris Danner, Yvonne Gagliardi, Claire Golembewski, Sally Hillman, Mary Maigert, Elise Maione, Bea Melanson, Christine Montgomery, Evelyn Roberts, Carolyn Schaeberle, Louise Scrabner, Kathy Sheldon, Sara Simpson, Frank Spinale, Ruth Spinale, Priscilla Weber. |
