Warriors net win No. 100 for coach Piotti
Top Headlines The victory helped the Warriors to their best start in school history - 5-0-1. Not only that, it was win No. 100 for head coach Bob Piotti, who has been at the helm for 10 years (100-90-28). "I didn't even know until after when my assistant (John Carde) told me," said Piotti. "It's something special. I can remember John and I running that first 6 a.m. skate back in 1996. It's hard to believe it's been 100 wins." Piotti is the architect of King Philip's turnaround and he has his Warriors playing some of their best hockey, evidenced by the undefeated start. KP had its hands full with a game Attleboro team in the first period of Wednesday night's first-round matchup, but the Warriors stretched a 2-1 first-period lead to 5-1 after two. "(Attleboro) played a really good first period and they had a nice game-plan defensively that really kept us from opening things up," said Piotti. "I just think the fact that we skate three lines deep was too much for them to overcome." King Philip advances to play host Walpole in the tournament finals Friday night (7), Walpole beating Medfield in the other game. Peter MacIntyre led the KP offensive outburst with two goals and an assist while Garrick Cronin had a goal and two helpers and Andrew Chandler had two goals. Others finding the back of the net were Cam Olean and Chris Pellichero. Goalie Dan Buckoff finished with 13 saves for the win. For Attleboro, Josh Dayer scored at the 6:30 mark of the first period but KP scored the next seven goals. Corey Escobar had 21 saves between the pipes for AHS. Mansfield 6, South Portland 0 PORTLAND, Maine - Brendan Cahill had three goals and an assist to help Mansfield win its second game in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational. Andrew Whittacker, Mike Oser and Lucas Bracken all played well in the win. With five players scoring their first varsity goals, Mansfield won its first-round game, beating South Portland, Maine, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon. Senior T.J. McCarthy led the way, scoring his varsity goal and then tacking on two more tallies for the hat trick. Mike Antonelli (2 assists), David Roche, Donny Washburn and Shane Harrington also netted their first career goals. Drew Rumbel scored Mansfield's other goal while goalie Ryan Kershaw made 16 saves as the Hornets (3-1-1) outshot South Portland 33-18. The invitational involves 48 teams playing three games each. Bishop Feehan 1, Durfee 1 TAUNTON - A power-play goal by Barrett Elliott in the second period pulled the Shamrocks into the deadlock in a non-league game at the Aleixo Arena. The teams each registered six shots in the opening period, but were scoreless after one. Bishop Feehan outshot Durfee 16-6 in the second period, but fell behind 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Nate Dupree at 5:30 of the period. The Shamrocks came back to tie the game at 1-1 on the score by Elliott at 2:17 with Pat Hannon and Devin Cornetta assisting. The Hilltoppers held a 7-6 shot advantage in the third period, but neither team was able to score. Bishop Feehan sophomore goaltender Tyler Holske had several key saves in the period, including one on a breakaway with five seconds remaining in regulation to preserve the tie. Holske finished the game with 18 saves, while Durfee goalie Zach Dupree was also a standout in net, making 27 saves for the Hilltoppers. Bishop Feehan, now 2-2-1 overall, will not be in action again until Saturday, January 6 when the Shamrocks host Bishop Stang in an Eastern Athletic Conference game at Aleixo Arena in Taunton at 6 p.m. Foxboro 3, South Shore Voke 3 FOXBORO - David Santos scored a pair of goals as the Warriors battled the Vikings to a deadlock in a non-league game. Foxboro took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Matt McCarthy, off assists from Dan Hixon and Alex Beaton, at 9:20 of the first period. South Shore Voke tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at 7:30 of the period. The Vikings then took a 2-1 lead when Al Jamieson scored later in the first. The first of two goals by Santos on a breakaway tied the game at 2-2 for the Warriors at 11:05 of the second period. Santos' second goal gave Foxboro a 3-2 advantage, 11 seconds into the third period with McCarthy assisting. However, South Shore Voke tied the game once again at 3-3 on a goal, just one minute later. Foxboro, still winlees and 0-3-2, will host Oliver Ames in a Hockomock League game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Foxboro Sports Center.
