That's one costly inch

ATTLEBORO - How much does an inch of snow cost the city?

A lot.

The city spent $25,586 on a 1-inch storm last week to ensure streets were safe to drive on.

Since there was so little snow, it was not plowed but was treated with sand, salt and ice melt.

More than half the cost was for salt. The city spread 295 tons on city streets at more than $50 a ton for a total of $14,893. About 387 tons of sand at around $8 a ton was spread for a total of about $3,100. About 3,000 pounds of ice melt at 29 cents a pound was put on the roads for about $870. Trucks burned about $853 worth of fuel.

Overtime was paid out at $4,723. Regular time and meals added another $1,147.

This snow season, just 2.75 inches of snow has fallen: 1.5 inches in early December, the 1 inches Monday/Tuesday of last week, and .25 inches Saturday night.
