Lawmaker's words 'outrageous,' some at King Philip claim

WRENTHAM - It was unprofessional and inappropriate for state Sen. Scott Brown to read obscenity-laced comments at a high school assembly, several King Philip Regional High School students said Friday.

The students said Brown, R-Wrentham, crossed the line when he read the comments and singled out students by name at the assembly.

Brown said he was defending himself and his family against comments posted by students on an Internet Web site discussion of gay marriage.

He said some of the written comments were directed at his daughter.

The senator also handed out printouts that contained the foul language.
Students leaving the school Friday afternoon said some of their classmates were reduced to tears by Brown.

They said students should not have used swear words to describe Brown on the Web site, but they added he should be mature enough to know he should not have repeated those words at a school assembly.

"I think if you are going to be a politician, you should be ready for criticism," senior Evan White said.

He said it was "outrageous" for Brown to "lash out" at the students.

One student defending Brown is junior William Hunt.

He said teachers and students are angry at Brown, but they are blowing the incident out of proportion.

"They got offended by his language, which I find ridiculous because they all know the language. I thank him for coming and influencing us," he said.

But others said the reaction of the school was running against Brown.

Ross Douglas, another senior, said many students were talking about the incident Friday and were upset at Brown.

He said he heard some students left the assembly crying.
Sam Jackson, a junior, said the students think Brown "verbally attacked" them.

"He should have been more professional," Jackson said.

Senior Casey Sughrue said a lot of students are angry about the incident and there was a lot of talk about it at the school.

She said some students believe Brown set out to "make fun of the students."

"It was pretty inappropriate, what he said," junior Chris Willson said.

Hunt, the student who supports Brown, said the senator was also reacting to negative comments teacher Joe Ferreira has made about Brown during class discussions of gay marriage.

" If one fourth of the Brown rumors floating around Wrentham throughout the years are true no wonder Scott lost his cool. I would too. No one wants their dirty laundry aired on the internet. But really, who cares about them? Do you think Joe Kennedy retaliated? No, he just changed to pumping oil. "

" What was Scott Brown thinking when he lied to KP by telling them he was coming to present his views on gay marriage and used it as a forum to display his out of control anger? We are diehard Republicans and he has lost our vote forever. And don't forget Mr. Brown, you can kiss the youth vote goodbye. "

" Look on the bright side. First Kerry shot himself in the foot. Politically, he's reached his pinnacle and cannot go further. Scott Brown did the same at KP...or did the Republican party decide he was all done before his "show" at KP? Hmmm What made Scott Brown shoot himself in the foot like Kerry? Are the rumors true perhaps? "

" We attend the same church as the Brown's. My child adores Ayla. She has her CD. Ayla sang at the church to the congregation long before she was a star. My child was in the group where Scott Brown chose to use vulgar language to teach the children a lesson. My child came home in tears not because these words had never been heard but because he embarrassed her. Most of all because he let her down. Good going, Scott. As a conservative and card carrying Republican I say to Scott, "How could you stoop so low. Have the rumors gotten to you? If so, look into your own soul and ask for forgiveness and for God sakes, go to church on Sunday." "

" Obscenities to minors? About all of these kids have heard / used the same exact language. Some of these "minors" were the exact individuals responsible for the original obscene quotes. Maybe Sen. Brown overreacted, but the kids (and their parents) should also realize with freedom of speech comes responsibilty for your words. "

Show 'n Tell wrote on Feb 10, 2007 5:00 PM:

" Brown published obscenities written by a few to a full room of minors, period. That was unconscionable. Doesn't Brown understand that being the butt of all kinds of comments is part and parcel of the things he has to take as a public figure? Does he understand that the more he criticizes the opinions of others the more they will see the real Scott Brown? This was not an example of leadership...this was an obvious fracture in the PR veneer that he's been hiding behind all along. "

" The whole point of Sen. Brown's comments was to show the difference between respectful disagreement on issues, and hateful demonizing of people we disagree with. He quoted the profanity to illustrate the latter approach. It was THEIR profanity, not his. It's ridiculous that he's the one being accused of hatemongering and obscenity when he was the one trying to elevate the quality of political debate! "

" Oh if the walls in the corner restaurant in downtown Wrentham could talk! I'm so sick of the rumors about Brown and his family. Only they know if they are true. Stick to the politics and leave out the Star Magazine stuff. "

" According to this am's Globe article, Brown is "a rising star in the state's depleted Republican ranks". Well, this rising star isn't as bright after his disasterous and emabarrsing incident at KP. It was a blow to the Mass Rep Party. Why are Republicans a dying breed? Because of the arrogance of policitians like Scott Brown. Richard Ross are you ready to be a state senator? I'll sign your papers! "

" It is my understanding that student William Hunt is not a student of the teacher whose classes were spoken to by Sen. Brown. How, then, does he actually know what the teacher said to his students prior to the senator's appearance? Seems to me rumor builds on rumor with little fact to support it. "

Jim wrote on Feb 10, 2007 11:14 AM:

" Good for Sen Brown for confronting these cowards. This will be the best lesson they learn all year - if you are going to say things like that in a public forum, be prepared for the consequences. If anyone was crying, I hope it was tears of shame. As for the schools not "protecting the children", give me a break. Kids today grow up faster than ever, so it's not like they don't know the words - and the authors did not deserve protection. "

Brown Family Supporter wrote on Feb 10, 2007 10:58 AM:

" Listen. You have no idea of the terrible rumors Scott and his family has had to put up with in this town. Peyton Place and Desperate Housewives have nothing over the rumors. He reached his saturation point and made a mistake. Please realize beneath the handsome family exterior are fine and decent people. Leave the Browns alone. "

" Students were not crying because of Scott Brown swearing, they were crying because he is an adult and obviously when children are spoken to by an adult and in a inappropriate manor they become overwhelmed. "

" If I had a problem with what some kids wrote on a website about myself or my family, would I have been afforded the opportunity to hold an assembly and pick out my attackers??....I think not !!..Mr. Brown has the right to defend his name and honor, but not in the manner in which he did. I would not be proud of my child if I found out they were writing hateful things about anyone and would deal with them. The more honorable way of Mr. Brown handling it would have been first approaching the childs parents if he had there names. His tactics were nothing more than a bully as well. Stop worrying about your image pretty boy. Shame on the Schools for even allowing this event to happen. You failed in your job at protecting the children. "

Joe Bob wrote on Feb 10, 2007 8:07 AM:

" Yes, inappropriate but let's not go crazy here. Sen. needs to have thicker skin especially against high school student comments but reitterating 2 swear words should not be reducing anyone to tears! "

Ed wrote on Feb 10, 2007 7:18 AM:

" I am not sure of the content of the web postings or what Mr. Brown repeated from them but I hope these students learned that you should not say nor print something you do not want repeated. If they wish to make a political or social statement then they should stick by their words,to do otherwise or hide behind a website is cowardice. It appears to me some of these students were cruel and hateful and they are the ones who were "outed"---just my two cents. "
