SA crash closes Route 1 half hour

ATTLEBORO - A local woman escaped serious injuries Saturday when her car was struck from behind by a full-sized pickup truck traveling at what police said was a high rate of speed.

Police believe the four-door Pontiac sedan driven by Alexis Ebert, 56, of 42 Pitas Ave., South Attleboro, could have become airborne after it was struck from the rear by a full-sized Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Jose Reyes, 18 of Pawtucket.

According to police reports, Reyes was spinning the tires on his full-sized truck and left 158 feet of skid marks before striking Ebert's car from the back. Both vehicles were traveling north on Route 1 at the time of the crash.

Police said 17 feet of tire marks from Ebert's car weren't found on the road, leading investigators to believe that the car became airborne. After her Pontiac struck the ground , it left another 57 feet of skid marks.

The accident which took place at 11:57 a.m. in front of the Honey Dew restaurant on Route 1 in South Attleboro, closed the roadway for an estimated 30 minutes while police took measurements and photos of the accident. Ebert was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, and was later treated and released.

Reyes was criminally cited with operating as to endanger.

Officers Ben Forrestal and Tony Lofton are investigating the accident, and Detective Russell Castro took photographs of the crash scene.
