Mansfield needs candidates

Do you know who's running for school committee in Mansfield?

Just one incumbent.

Even though two three-year seats are on the May 8 annual election ballot.

And even though on July 1, Mansfield will be under new management: a new superintendent, a new business manager, a new high school principal and potentially a new curriculum director.

These new leaders will shape how Mansfield addresses costly space crunches at Mansfield High School, Qualters Middle School and the Roland Green Preschool. The school department hasn't been at such a crossroads in years.

Yet the school committee seats have drawn no interest beyond incumbent Jean Miller; incumbent Emil Giordano is not seeking re-election.

As an art teacher might say to a student, what's wrong with this picture?

Who will lead the new leaders?

That's not suggesting that the current school board has done a poor job.

However, members should not get a free pass at the polls.

Especially when multiple seats are up.

And especially during a time of change, like now.

Voters have a good chance to shape their school department's future on May 8.

They deserve to consider a variety of directions. As they will for selectman and town moderator. Nomination papers are available from Town Clerk Helen Christian. The deadline for submitting papers signed by at least 50 certified registered voters to the board of registrars is March 20.

In the bookbag

I just finished reading "Bad Business," a Spenser mystery by Robert B. Parker. I've just started "State of Emergency," by Pat Buchanan.

" How can someone run for school committee? Do they need to have held an office before? Do they any degrees? I have 2 small children in the school system and I would love to have some sort of say in how things are done here. I have lived in Mansfield almost 30 years and went to school here. I have been watching how things are growing and believe that a great school system is important to attract new residents. "
