LETTER: More bad news for King Philip High School

To the editor:

Let's see if I get this straight: Some students post vile obscenities directed at a state senator and his daughter on a Web site. They were supposedly motivated by a self-admitted rant against this senator by a KP teacher. The object of this attack then goes to the school to defend himself and publicizes the insults hurled against him - in effect exposing these creeps. The KP School Committee then demands that the senator apologize for HIS actions! That's like getting punched in the face and being told to apologize to the attacker for getting your nose in the way of his fist.

Sen. Brown didn't initiate this controversy. The teacher and students should be held accountable for their actions, but apparently won't be. Just how spineless is this school committee and administration? What's really going on here is the politically correct double standard and cowardice that runs rampant through the public school environment. Imagine if a liberal woman legislator were the target of obscenity -laden emails by conservative students inspired by a right wing teacher at KP. This school committee and administration would be jumping through hoops to condemn the perpetrators with threats of suspensions, expulsions, etc.

The last thing King Philip High needs is another dose of bad publicity, coming on top of the West Point controversy at graduation last year that made the school a laughing stock. If you believe that bad things come in threes, what's this school going to do next - buy the school superintendent a Cadillac DeVille?
