LETTER: More bad news for King Philip High School

To the editor:

Let's see if I get this straight: Some students post vile obscenities directed at a state senator and his daughter on a Web site. They were supposedly motivated by a self-admitted rant against this senator by a KP teacher. The object of this attack then goes to the school to defend himself and publicizes the insults hurled against him - in effect exposing these creeps. The KP School Committee then demands that the senator apologize for HIS actions! That's like getting punched in the face and being told to apologize to the attacker for getting your nose in the way of his fist.

Sen. Brown didn't initiate this controversy. The teacher and students should be held accountable for their actions, but apparently won't be. Just how spineless is this school committee and administration? What's really going on here is the politically correct double standard and cowardice that runs rampant through the public school environment. Imagine if a liberal woman legislator were the target of obscenity -laden emails by conservative students inspired by a right wing teacher at KP. This school committee and administration would be jumping through hoops to condemn the perpetrators with threats of suspensions, expulsions, etc.

The last thing King Philip High needs is another dose of bad publicity, coming on top of the West Point controversy at graduation last year that made the school a laughing stock. If you believe that bad things come in threes, what's this school going to do next - buy the school superintendent a Cadillac DeVille?

" Brown is and will always be a self-serving, arrogant man. Kudos to the students for putting him in his place. "

" I still do not see how so many people can condemn the entire student body of King Philip simply because a hand full of students decided to voice their opinions in an offensive manner over the internet. Further, I do not see how even more people can condemn the whole faculty at King Philip for a single teacher's fault. Also... J Gal, how is putting down a public official with vulgarity over the internet equivalent to murder? "

" Maybe the parents should take responsibility for their kids getting away with things. Schools shouldn't have to parent your kids, JGal. The blame is on both Brown for calling the kids out, which isn't necessary, and the KP administrators who allowed it to happen. If people like Chip would let it go, the kids could get on with their lives. Sheesh. "

Settledown wrote on Mar 5, 2007 4:04 PM:

" Actually, it's the job of the parents JGal, not the school system(s) job to hold kids responsible. If you parents did your jobs the school wouldn't have to parent the kids. I, as a teacher, shouldn't have to parent your child for you. Take some responsibility please. Both the teacher that started this whole thing and Brown are at fault. Both used impressionable minds for their own gain. "

" Spamalot, Pity and faux concern is the refuge of a weak debater. "

" So then, J Gal, if it had been your kids that were berated by the good senator during his talk just because they happened to be there and NOT because they had actually contributed to the offensive remarks, that would be OK? Instead of simply pulling the offending students aside to express your concern, it's OK to go after all of the students, just lump them all together, generalize and pretty much say that all teenagers deserve it? How refreshing to know that the means by which prejudice flourishes, generalizing and collectivizing, is the benchmark for how people want others to be treated. I truly hope that neither you nor your children are ever put in the position of being condemned just because of a group you belong to so you won't have to experience how it feels. "

J Gal wrote on Mar 5, 2007 10:08 AM:

" I couldn't agree more with Mr Faulkner. Sen. Scott Brown had every right to hold these kids accountable; and frankly that is why teenagers pretty much get away with murder these days, because it's the people like Spamalot, the school system and others who don't hold these kids accountable for their actions. Way to go Sen. Brown, you've got my vote! "

Spamalot wrote on Mar 5, 2007 9:37 AM:

" It's too bad that the egregiously selfish Mr. Faulkner, a man who has repeatedly bashed, berated and condemned any and all school-related activities in the King Philip district due to his no-taxes-at-all bias, chooses to once again take pot shots at the school along with his side-swipe at Gov. Deval Patrick. The fact that he wasn't present when Sen. Brown made his remarks matters not at all. Brown is a Republican and that's enough for him. So, lacking actual knowledge of events, he, like so may others, accepts the senator's view of things and hits is favourite target, King Philip. Of course, the 99.9% of students who didn't comment about the senator on-line or anywhere else don't matter at all. It's enough that the senator is offended to condemn the students, the school and the district once again. How utterly absurd and sad that this is what passes for thinking for some members of the public these days. "
