TAUNTON - Two waves of firefighters from several local towns battled a fire of at least five alarms at a three-story tenement in the center of Taunton on Friday.
Three Taunton firefighters were injured in the third-floor blaze at 51 Park St., dispatcher Ed Hayes said.
Two of those firefighters were trapped, "and they had to bail out a third-floor window" and onto a ladder, Hayes said. The third firefighter injured a knee.
The fire remained under investigation Friday night. Firefighters were still at the scene at 6 p.m.
The 911 call came in about 20 minutes to 2, Hayes said.
"Within 2 minutes, the call went out to empty the stations: everybody to the fire," he said.
At that point, firefighters were called from these communities: Norton, Dighton, Raynham, Lakeville and Berkley.
Within 20 minutes, a second call went out to: Mansfield, Rehoboth, Middleboro, Bridgewater, Easton, Somerset and Freetown, Hayes said.
Norton fire Lt. Kent Campbell said a Norton fire engine and a ladder truck were initially asked to cover Taunton's Bay Street fire station.
However, "just as we drove up to it, we were directed to the scene," Campbell said.
