PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sophomore Jared Barnes of North Attleboro, a Bishop Feehan grad, pitched three innings without allowing an earned run in his first action of the season for the Wheaton College baseball team, but the Lyons dropped their third straight game, falling 7-3 to Rutgers University of Camden, N.J., its fourth game during a summer break series.
The Lyons took a 1-0 first inning lead, tied the game at 2-2 in the second and at 3-3 in the third. However, Rutgers-Camden scored single runs in each the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth frames. Lyon senior Travis Anthoine of Portland, Maine doubled down the right field line to lead off the first and eventually scored on two straight ground balls for the go-ahead run.
Wheaton senior Jeff Martin of Marblehead singled home classmate Adam Laplante of Harwich in the second. The Lyons tied the game again in the third as junior Jake Yagjian of Brewster drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored by stealing third and taking advantage of a throwing error.
Freshman hurler Pat Martin of Rockland took the mound loss for Wheaton, surrendering four runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks in three innings. Sophomore Nick Pecora of Highland Park, N.J. had two of the Wheaton hits. The Lyons have left at least 11 runners on base in three of its five games thus far.
Wheaton faces The College of New Jersey today.
