North health board drops fluoride lawsuit

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The fluoridation lawsuit is officially off.

Following through on a campaign pledge from new member John Donohue, the board of health voted to withdraw its lawsuit against the department of public works.

As expected, the vote to stop the lawsuit passed 2-1, with member Susan Shaw opposed.

The board also voted to end a cease and desist order issued to the board of public works demanding that it stop fluoridation, an order that public works has ignored on the advice of town counsel.

Shaw and former board member Diane Battistello, both fluoride opponents, voted to file the lawsuit in New Bedford Superior Court after public works ignored the cease and desist order. The suit was scheduled to be heard May 29. "It's the job of the department of public works to ensure we have good clean water, and any additives should be left up to patients and their physicians," Shaw said.

Donohue and board Chairman Donald Bates let the vote to end the lawsuit speak for itself.

"I think it's all been said already," Donohue said.

" If all of you feel so strongly about this, maybe you should have made sure the vote the town made 7 years ago didn't win. The issue here isn't whether flouridation is good or bad, there's a million poorly done studies to prove or refute those points, its the fact that a town board was bringing another town board to court. That is unacceptable and just can't happen if the current town government structure is to remain intact. "

" The relationship between flouride and healthier teeth is a correlation and not causal. There are those who believe that since artificial flouridation is used by affluent communities that have access to good preventative dental care that flouride is not the reason for fewer cavities, but rather regular brushing and prophylactic treatments are the reason. However there may be a causal realtionship with artificial flouride and osteoporosis. "

" North Attleborough has lost today. Fluoride is only effective in fighting tooth decay through direct contact, such as in toothpaste and paste treatments at the doctor's office, in prescribed amounts. To add it to water which is swallowed with virtually no contact with teeth is simple slow, low-dose poisoning - the hardest kind to prove. "

" So before everyone sticks their heads back in the sand, don't forget to put out your "Do Not Disturb" signs. Those of us who have made the effort to learn some of the lesser- discussed aspects of fluoride's revenge will savor the distant jingling of cash registers as parents fork out the big bucks for their kiddies' orthodontics. YAY!!!!!!!!!!! Rainbow braces!!!! They"re so cool !!!!!!!!!!!! "

" Swell. We'll have to continue buying gallons of water so we don't poison ourselves. Never mind tooth decay - fluoride is a known casue of osteoporosis in women, starting at 40. "

" Fluoridation is ineffective at reducing tooth decay, harmful to health and a waste of money. It's a shame these elected officials are still jeopardizing their friends and neighbors.
