Gas leak forces evacuation

PLAINVILLE - A natural gas leak forced the evacuation of several streets off Route 106 for about 2 hours Tuesday, but no injuries or damage were reported.

The fire department received its first call at 11:43 a.m. from a single-family residence at 10 East Bacon St. (Route 106), where the homeowner complained of a hissing gas stove.

"When we arrived, we found the house filled with natural gas," Fire Chief Ted Joubert said.

Just as firefighters discovered a fire in the basement of that home, the department began receiving calls from other nearby businesses and residents also complaining of a strong odor of gas.

Supporting fire engines and police from North Attleboro, Franklin, Foxboro, Wrentham and Norfolk were called to assist at buildings on Hillcrest Drive, School Street, Spring Street and Pleasant Street. Joubert said power was shut down in the immediate area, and residents were evacuated to a local senior center before New England Gas arrived to reduce pressure on the problem gas line. The fire chief said aid from nearby towns was crucial in containing the problem.

"In a town like ours, with limited resources, support from mutual aid communities is a huge component to keeping things safe," he said.
