More condos eyed for Attleboro

ATTLEBORO - A developer hopes to tear down a four-unit Mechanic Street apartment house and build nine condominiums on its one-acre lot.

The project would create three, three-unit condominium buildings that would stretch from the street toward Mechanics Pond.

Developer Thomas LeBlanc needs to get the property rezoned from industrial to general residence to build the condominiums. The property abuts a recently completed condominium complex on the former site of Clear Float Inc.

The industrial property, which is located at 83 Mechanic St., is owned by Ronald Caponigro. A public hearing on the rezoning change is set for Tuesday at city hall before the planning board and city council.

Also on tap Tuesday is a hearing on the rezoning of nine acres of residential land off Route 1 near the North Attleboro line to a "planned highway business" designation. Wal-Mart, which is located in North Attleboro on Route 1 is hoping to expand its store on the nine acres, which are at the rear of the store in Attleboro.

The big-box retailer is hoping to expand its 120,069-square-foot store by 68,969 square feet to create a "Supercenter."

Carpionato Properties owns the land.
