Moving money sought for farmhouse

MANSFIELD - The Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce has launched a $90,000 capital campaign to move to a farmhouse at the Mansfield Crossing shopping center on School Street, possibly by next spring.

Initial renovation estimates for the former White's Farm House have come in around $120,000, chamber Executive Director Tricia White said Tuesday.

The chamber will take out a loan for whatever it cannot raise through monetary or service donations, she said. It has raised about $35,000 since launching the campaign in January, White said.

Chamber officials have discussed the project with Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School and the Bristol County Sheriff's Department about help with the renovation.

"Ideally, we would like to be in there around this time next year," White said. Mansfield Bank has agreed to be the lead bank for a loan of up to $120,000, White said. Six other banks have offered help, as well.

The chamber has signed a 99-year lease with W/S Development, which is behind the 395,000-square-foot mall.

The mall - bordered by School Street, Route 140 and Interstate 495 - is expected to begin opening this fall.

Kohl's department store, the L.L. Bean outdoor retailer and TGI Friday's restaurant are among the major tenants.

The chamber, which serves Foxboro, Mansfield and Norton, currently is based at 15 West St. in Mansfield.

Under the new lease, W/S Development agreed to move the farmhouse from elsewhere on the mall property and place it on a foundation at the back of the site, bring utilities up to the house, build a handicapped access ramp and complete paving and landscaping.

The chamber must upgrade heating, plumbing and electrical systems, add a handicapped accessible bathroom, replace the windows and doors and paint the exterior.

Peter Bowden of Home Plan Designs in Taunton will present an interior design plan to the chamber directors on Thursday, White said. Bowden donated his services to the chamber, she said.
