King Philip gets drop on Ashland

ASHLAND - Tyler Burks earned the deciding point of the match with a victory at the third singles position as the King Philip Regional High boys' tennis team edged Ashland, 3-2, in a non-league match on Tuesday afternoon.

Burks dropped the first set to Scott Picard, 6-3, but bounced back to take the next two sets by identical scores of 6-4.

The Warriors collected their other points in the double matches. Alex Huth and Jake Archibald won their match at the first doubles spot, while Jeff Greenwood and Sean Maguire did the same at second doubles.

With the victory, King Philip improved to 13-5 overall. The Warriors will have a pair of matches on Friday against Hopedale. The first match will be the completion of an earlier suspended contest with the second being the originally scheduled match.

The KING PHILIP girls breezed to a 5-0 triumph over Ashland in non-league play despite a shuffled lineup that elevated junior varsity players to the big time in doubles competition. At No. 3 singles, freshman Sarah Shipley improved her personal record to 18-0 (20-1 including state play) with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Clockers' Heather Shastany. "She just continues to astound me," said KP coach Bob Goldberg of Shipley, the British import who picked up a racquet for the first time this past summer at a tennis camp run by the veteran KP coach.

KP (15-3) visits Foxboro today.

Meanwhile on Cape Cod, the ATTLEBORO boys suffered a 3-2 loss to Old Colony League champion Barnstable to finish their league season at 5-3. First-singles player James Bensson turned in a gem against the Red Raiders' Chris Leveroni, who had lost only one other match this year, winning a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

The key point of the match came when Attleboro's previously-unbeaten first-doubles tandem of Mark Morin and Craig Eastman suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 loss to Barnstables's Tim Ball and Blake Blaze. "It just wasn't their day," said AHS coach Russ Severs.

Attleboro (10-7) visits North Attleboro Thursday.

Freshman Kevin Fisher and sophomore Pat Hillman earned singles victories as the NORTON boys defeated Oliver Ames, 4-1, in a non-league match. Fisher captured his match at the second singles position, while Hillman won at the third singles spot.

The first doubles team of Chris Brooks and Kevin Sands won their match as did Zach Schleicher and Ryan Kok at second doubles for Norton (8-11). The Lancers will host Millis in a Tri-Valley League match this afternoon.

The first doubles team of seniors Elissa Quenneville and Chaia Werger played well as the ATTLEBORO girls fell 5-0 to undefeated Barnstable in an Old Colony League match.

The Red Raider team of Jess Francis and Courtney Kelly reached the state championship this year, but Quenneville and Werger hung in there, dropping the match 6-3, 6-2.

Barnstable remained undefeated on the season at 17-0. The Bombardiers (3-14, 2-6 OCL) will host North Attleboro in a non-league match on Senior Day on Thursday afternoon. The second doubles team of Allison Dutcher and Rachel Maggiani captured their match as the NORTON girls fell to Dover-Sherborn, 4-1, in a Tri-Valley League match. The Lancers (0-14) will travel to Millis for a league match this afternoon.
